Visit Trailside and enjoy beautiful paved walking trails, scenic views of the Hudson River and learn about Southern New York’s natural history.

If you are hungry for more after touring Trailside Museums and Zoo, there are a variety of places to explore and things to see while visiting Bear Mountain State Park.

Hiking – Take advantage of the many miles of hiking trails throughout the park. The famous Appalachian Trail (2,000 mile trek from Georgia to Maine) runs right through the park and the zoo! The lowest point on the entire trail is in front of our bear den exhibit. Trail maps are available for purchase at the Bear Mountain Office or at the Visitor Center on the Palisades Parkway.

Boating – Paddle and row boats are available for hourly rent at Hessian Lake. Contact the Bear Mountain office for hours and prices.

History- Learn about the Revolutionary War throughout the park and zoo. Hike the 1777 trail, study in the History Museum, or take the Fort Montgomery trail that starts at Trailside and extends over the Popolopen Creek via a foot bridge. This trail can be hazardous during inclimate weather conditions, so please use caution!

Picnicking - There are picnicking and grilling sites designated throughout the park. PLEASE NO PICNICKING WITHIN THE ZOO.

Carousel and Ice Rink – The Carousel is currently open on weekends and holidays from 10am-5pm with extended hours during the summer. The Ice Rink is scheduled to be open October-March. Please refer to their website for details: www.bearmountainicerink.com
