TITLE (Temporary/Seasonal) Park & Recreation Aide 6

$13.82 per hour, 40 hours/week: Friday through Tuesday, including holidays

Duration: Long-term seasonal

DutiesUnder the general supervision of higher level personnel, the P&R Aide 6 will perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and repair activities at Trailside Museums and Zoo, a facility within Bear Mountain State Park. Duties include maintenance of grounds, including operation of basic maintenance tools (line trimmers, mowers, etc.); daily cleaning of exhibit buildings and visitor facilities; painting, upkeep, and repair of exhibits. S/he will assist with facility operations, including helping with the daily opening of Trailside buildings and crowd control during the end of day closing procedures. Duties require weekend and holiday work.

Minimum qualifications: Basic maintenance experience and familiarity with the operation of maintenance tools. Must be able to lift and move 80 lbs. The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic, ability to work well with others and independently, flexibility to work on different assignments, and courtesy skills. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Must have valid driver’s license.

Start date: Immediately.

ASSISTANT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR (7 positions) in Harriman State Park, New York 

The following seasonal vacancy is announced in the Palisades Region of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation:

TITLE:  Park & Recreation Aide 3

HIRING RATE:  $10.16/hour, 40 hours/week, includes 2 nights. May include weekends & holidays. Free housing rustic cabin to share with another environmental educator. Responsible for your own meals, transportation, laundry & cabin housekeeping.

LOCATION: Nature Museums, Harriman State Park, New York

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Temporary/Seasonal Start Date: June 15, 2017. End date: August 18, 2017 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Nature Museums, the incumbent will perform design, construct, maintain and interpret living and static exhibits for a small nature museum; conduct museum tours and nature programs for children; maintain a safe and welcoming environment where all children are valued and encouraged; establish and cultivate a collaborative and respectful relationship with the other staff and Coordinator; perform light facility maintenance; and dress appropriately, report to work punctually and work diligently. Incumbent will receive training in outdoor education, including Project Wet and Project Wild. Duties are performed independently as museums are in four different areas of a very large park.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A current college student or graduate in environmental science/studies, natural history, science education, outdoor/environmental education, ecology or related field. Experience in nature center or nature education may be substituted for the above. Working knowledge of New York State flora and fauna, ability to work with youth of diverse backgrounds, and ability to handle small animals. Applicants must possess a strong work ethic, be flexible and eager to try new adventures. Art skills are beneficial. Applicants need to provide evidence that they have the ability to work in an area with limited communication and in an independent, productive and responsible manner.

OPERATING NEEDS: Candidate must be physically able to perform medium physical labor and to work with staff in a collaborative environment. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age; have a valid driver’s license and be available to work weekends and holidays. Transportation within the park is the responsibility of the applicant, mileage is not reimbursable.
