DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under the general supervision of higher level personnel, the selected candidate will be involved in every aspect of Trailside’s maintenance, including its facilities in Harriman State Park. Performs routine maintenance using a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including trucks, mowers, snow blowers, power saws, backpack blowers and line trimmers. Performs building and grounds maintenance including trash and recycling collection, daily cleaning of restrooms and museums, upkeep including painting, trail repairs, basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and other repairs. Assigns, supervises, reviews, trains and evaluates work of lower level maintenance employees. Employee assists with facility operations, including daily opening and closing of buildings and gates, crowd management during closing procedures, and set up and breakdown for special events. During winter months, employee removes snow by operating snow blowers/salter and shoveling. Incumbent interacts with the public by answering their questions. Assists in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and practices, assisting and directing staff and working with patrons to minimize potential problems. Assists in other areas of operations as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a Park, Historic Site or Recreational Facility; OR two years of experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical/trades school course.


  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver’s License as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor, including ability lift and move 80 lbs.
  • Must be able to supervise others, communicate orally and in writing, and read and comprehend written materials.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with park patrons, be available to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess and maintain as a term and condition of employment a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or obtain one within the probationary period.
